University student’s body found in Ballito

According to the National Sea Rescue Institute, he and his brother had stopped for a swim during their return journey from the Drakensberg to Johannesburg.

The body of a 23-year-old University of Limpopo student was recovered at Clarke Bay, Ballito, on Friday after he drowned in Umhlanga earlier last week.

He went missing last Monday, November 25, after being caught in a rip current while swimming at Umhlanga’s Eastmore Crescent.

According to the National Sea Rescue Institute, he and his brother had stopped for a swim during their return journey from the Drakensberg to Johannesburg.

Eyewitnesses reported the drowning in progress, prompting a large-scale response from emergency services.

Despite efforts of rescue teams over several days, including the use of rescue boards, torpedo buoys and free-diving, the young man’s body was ultimately discovered more than 50km north of the incident site.

Police, assisted by KwaDukuza lifeguards, recovered the body and it was taken to the government health forensic pathology services.
