Forty new KwaDukuza lifeguards join beach patrol for festive season

Extended lifeguard hours begin as KwaDukuza prepares for busy beach season

Forty temporary lifeguards will bolster the ranks of the current 23 permanent lifeguards stationed at KwaDukuza beaches this festive season to enhance swimmers’ safety.

Summer season lifeguard hours have also kicked in. Until the end of January, lifeguards will be on duty daily from 6am to 6pm at the municipality’s seven official swimming beaches.

“We urge residents and holidaymakers to avoid swimming at unprotected beaches. The easiest way to know if a beach is protected is to check for lifeguards. If none are present, that beach is unprotected – please do not swim there,” said KwaDukuza lifeguard superintendent, Bongani Xulu.

He emphasised the dangers of swimming under the influence of alcohol, likening it to drunk driving in terms of risk.

Additionally, for those planning to enjoy a braai on the beach, facilities are only available at Tinley Manor, Blythedale and Zinkwazi’s Black Rock beaches.

The lifeguards put their fitness levels on full display last Friday ahead of the festive season with a series of fun, yet challenging obstacle events.

The test kicked off at Willard Beach with a swim to Thompson’s Bay, a run back to Willard, a paddle on malibu boards to Thompson’s and a final sprint back to Willard Beach.

“It’s been a while since we have done something like this. It felt amazing to come together to do what we love,” said lifeguard Ernest Phungula.
