Six-hour fight to bring fire at Gledhow and Sappi mills under control

The cause of the fire is unknown.

A fire at the Gledhow sugar mill and Sappi paper mill kept firefighters busy for six hours yesterday afternoon before it was brought under control.

A conveyor system that connects the mills caused the fire to spread from one to the other, but at this stage it is unclear at which plant the fire started.

The KwaDukuza fire department’s 14 firefighters, IPSS Search & Rescue and the Sappi fire department worked together to extinguish the flames.

Firefighters worked six hours to extinguish the blaze.

According to IPSS spokesperson Samantha Meyrick, the cause of the fire remains unknown, but no injuries were reported.

Firefighters spent four hours bringing the fire under control, with an additional two hours required to fully extinguish it.
