#BookReview: The Nightingale a compelling page-turner

While not everyone is going to love The Nightingale, a wide audience will likely find the story highly appealing.
Intrigue, drama and a doomed love story make for unforgettable storytelling. With all the hallmarks of a great movie (watch out for the film adaptation in 2025), and if you can look past the cliches you will not be able to put it down.
Set in Nazi-occupied France during World War II, the novel centres on two sisters navigating the horrors of war.
Isabelle is an impulsive (and strikingly beautiful) young woman who longs to make a meaningful contribution to the resistance, and Vianne, the older sister, is just trying to survive and keep her family and Jewish best friend and neighbour safe.
Isabelle’s bad-boy love interest escaped from prison when the Nazi’s took over Paris and soon becomes a key figure in the resistance (think Jamie Dornan in 50 Shades meets Heart of Stone).
The novel also features two contrasting Nazi officers billeted in Vianne’s home. One is a “dad next door” type whose brutal role in the regime is at odds with his acts of kindness to Vianne and her family, while the other is a repugnant embodiment of cruelty – an impactful if rather heavy-handed depiction of wartime moral complexity.
The war takes the sisters in opposite directions, but both will find their own way to make their lives matter when the world around them goes to hell.
Ultimately what makes The Nightingale unforgettable is that it is loosely based on the true story of Andrée de Jongh, a young Belgian woman who helped Allied airmen escape by personally escorting them over the Pyrenees on foot.
This dangerous 1 300km journey along the Comet escape line – named for the speed at which soldiers were moved – serves as a powerful backdrop to the novel’s themes of courage and sacrifice.
The Nightingale is a testament to the extraordinary lengths people will go to in the face of unimaginable adversity.
