One lucky family is set for a very merry Christmas after winning R1 million in the Moments of Magic competition at Pick n Pay Ballito Junction last weekend.

Wynter (surname withheld) from Pretoria is one of 10 customers to secure the daily prize and walk away a millionaire this festive season.

“I cannot explain the feeling, but it’s unbelievable,” said Wynter. “We keep pinching ourselves. It’s mind-boggling, and we can’t comprehend it yet.”

Wynter and her husband, Johan, have been visiting Ballito for their summer holidays since they were children, but did not have the money to come last summer. This year, however, the couple wanted to have their first Christmas holiday with their two-year-old daughter on the Dolphin Coast.

“We flew into Durban on Saturday morning and Pick n Pay was our first stop for the week’s groceries,” said Wynter. “My husband waited in the car because our daughter was sleeping.

“When I went into Ballito Junction, I didn’t know where Pick n Pay was. I asked the people wrapping gifts for directions. They sent me towards Checkers and Woolworths, but I still – luckily – chose to go to Pick n Pay.”

From December 13 until December 22, one customer per day, shopping in a Pick n Pay Supermarket, Liquor Store or on the PnP ‘asap! on-demand’ app, will become an instant millionaire if they buy specific products.

“It was just normal groceries, I didn’t even think about what to select for the competition,” said Wynter, who did not know about the competition.

Winning such a substantial amount of money will allow the couple to pay off their car and a portion of their bond after a financially stressful year.

“My husband and I have had a rough year. He was retrenched in October 2023, so this is going to make a huge difference to our lives.

“We could not afford to visit our family and so we were alone with our baby for her first Christmas. Now we can spoil our family, and pay off our debt, which is amazing. I think it was in God’s hands us winning, I really believe that.”
