Ndwedwe carjacker arrested for theft of Hyundai Accent

The victim recognised one of his attackers which led to a quick arrest.

A 41-year-old man was recently arrested in connection with a carjacking incident in Ndwedwe on December 11.

According to iLembe police spokesperson captain Alex Thomson, an armed man and an accomplice ambushed a man opening his home’s gate. The victim retreated into his yard for safety and the thieves drove off with his Hyundai Accent.

“Fortunately, the victim recognised one of the suspects who was known to him. He reported the incident to Ndwedwe police, which led to a successful investigation and the arrest of the suspect. Police are still searching for the accomplice,” said Thomson.

iLembe police urge the public to remain vigilant and follow these safety tips to reduce the risk of carjackings:

  • Stay alert for followers: Be cautious when leaving shopping centres, work or home, especially at night. Keep emergency contact numbers such as the police and your security provider easily accessible.
  • Exercise caution in driveways: Wait in the street until your gate is fully open before entering your driveway. Ensure the area is well-lit, especially after dark.
  • Assess your surroundings: Before entering your property, turn off the radio and remain alert. If something seems suspicious, drive around the block to reassess the situation.
  • Be aware when parking: Check your surroundings before leaving your car. Avoid sitting in your parked vehicle without staying alert.
  • Be alert when entering your vehicle: Have your keys ready, lock your doors immediately after getting in, and keep windows closed. Store valuables out of sight to deter theft.
