Flower picking experience blooms in Ballito
A first-of-its-kind in KwaZulu-Natal, The Flower Farm offers an unforgettable hands-on experience where visitors can harvest vibrant blooms in a sustainable, eco-friendly paradise.
There’s a buzz outside Ballito, and it’s not just the bees.
The Flower Farm has opened its fields to flower lovers, offering a hands-on experience of harvesting vibrant blooms from sustainable, eco-friendly gardens.
As the only destination of its kind in KwaZulu-Natal, this vibrant hub of all things bright and beautiful is likely to prove a popular attraction for both locals and holidaymakers.
Open only just over a week, The Flower Farm is already attracting attention from curious flower lovers drawn like butterflys to sweet nectar.
Owners Sam Sparrow and Dale Grobler recently uprooted their thriving flower business in Monteseel in Hillcrest to set up at Sugar Rush Park.

“It was a big decision to move, but the location, weather and audience in Ballito are perfectly suited to growing and selling flowers,” said Sparrow.
“We also replant the flowers every year after they die back in May, so it was a case of turning the field from its previous purpose as a rugby field into flower beds.”
The couple’s flower business was established in 2021 after the Covid-19 lockdown knocked out Grobler’s farming venture.
“I was in advertising and Dale a successful organic farmer who specialised in supplying high-end restaurants. Covid put his business in serious trouble and we had to pivot quickly to make ends meet.”
Sparrow said the flower business exceeded their every expectation. “We are sold out every season!”
The Flower Farm is more than a place to gather flowers; it is a hub of sustainability and connection. Committed to eco-friendly and organic farming practices, the farm ensures that each bloom is cultivated with care for the environment.

“What makes The Flower Farm truly unique is its emphasis on creating memorable experiences. Visitors are invited to stroll through fields of colourful blossoms, hand-picking their favourites to craft custom bouquets to take home.”
Currently the farm is stocked with 3 500 varieties, from Zinnias and Sunflowers to Amaranthus and Cosmos. Sparrow said they are always changing the selection, which is season dependant.
Their soon-to-launch wholesale division will supply fresh, locally-grown flowers to florists, event planners, and the public.
You have to book your slot beforehand and Sparrow said they allow a maximum of 20 buckets per four-hour session. The cost is R350 per bucket of flowers.
“We limit the number of people because this is all about the experience. A visit here is a reminder of the simple joys of nature and connecting with friends, family or yourself. We want people to be in nature, and see that flowers don’t just come from Woolworths.”
