Microlight pilot survives crash-landing in sugarcane field near Groutville

The crash was witnessed by passing motorists who called for help.

A microlight pilot was lucky to escape with his life after crash-landing in a sugarcane field this morning.

The man lost control of the microlight just before 8am and ended up in the sugarcane fields between the Groutville Airfield (near the Umvoti Toll) and Palm Lakes Family Estate.

Search and rescue teams were called by passing motorists who saw the incident from the N2.

“Multiple units were immediately dispatched, searching the sugarcane fields in an attempt to locate the microlight and pilot,” said IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson, Samantha Meyrick.
