Ballito Photo Club’s February winners exhibit moving images of the natural world
The club enlists nationally accredited judges and accepts photographers of all skill levels.
More than 100 photographs were in the running for the February edition of the popular monthly Ballito Photo Club competition.
Last month’s set subject was “Transportation”, with Denita Lawrence claiming the prize for “Dog Powered”.
John Louw was the overall senior winner in the nature (birds only) category with “Landing”.

Carol Smith won the colour open category with “Approaching Bull”.

Smith also took top honours with “A Close Call” in the nature (no birds) category.

Jacqueline Nel took the junior honours for “Red and Blue” in the “Scapes” category, for land, sea and city photos.

In the mono category, Debbie du Plessis placed first with “Kindred”.

Rung Button’s “Cosmos Canvas” won the visual art section of the competition. Alan Nixon topped the ‘Our Africa’ theme with “Impi” to round off the awards.

Nationally accredited photography judges are used to select the winners for all Ballito Photo Club competitions. These judges offer valuable insight and advice to the contestants, which helps members improve their craft. These judges consider focus, exposure, composition, correct cropping and other aspects to decide the winners.
The Ballito Photo Club works on a ranking system devised by the Photographic Society of South Africa. This handicap system sees the top-ranked photographers judged more strictly. This is why there are senior and junior categories.
New members start as 1-star, depending on each score from each competition. Rankings 1 to 3 are for juniors, while 4 and upwards is ranked as senior.
