Helicopter deployed in search for missing 87-year-old Esenembe grandmother
The grandmother went missing while picking herbs in a nearby plantation.
A search is underway for 87-year-old Cwelani Jayiya, who went missing four days ago after leaving her home in Emthombisi, Esenembe to pick herbs.
Jayiya was last seen on Thursday, at about 8am, heading towards KwaMaqimba. She was wearing a yellow scarf on her head and a red cloth wrapped around her waist. She is described as short, slim, light in complexion, with brown eyes.
After her disappearance, Jayiya’s family initially searched for her but, after four days without success, contacted Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) on Monday morning for assistance.
In response, RUSA conducted an aerial search over Upper Tongaat, covering dams, sugarcane and banana plantations in the hopes of locating her.
The helicopter searched for about one and a half hours but there was no trace of the elderly woman.
