Elderly woman killed, three injured in Tongaat house fire

All four became trapped when the house caught on fire, the cause of which is currently unknown.

An elderly woman tragically lost her life in a house fire in the Belvedere suburb of Tongaat this morning.

She was one of four people trapped in the house when it caught on fire and was unfortunately unable to escape in time to save her life.

The remaining three occupants were rescued by emergency services, with one, a woman, seriously injured and the remaining two, a father and son, suffering from minor burns and smoke inhalation.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue’s Samantha Meyrick, the woman had to be intubated and placed on a ventilator, before being taken to hospital.

Meyrick thanked Tongaat community members who risked their lives to help in rescue efforts before emergency services arrived.

The eThekwini Fire Department has since extinguished the fire, the cause of which will be investigated.
