Hearty R108 000 raised for the Orphan Fund at Salt Rock potjie extravaganza

The Swan and Seasnake Potjie and Punch competition returned for its fifth year and enjoyed its largest support yet.

More than R100 000 was raised for The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund at this year’s Swan and Seasnake Potjie and Punch competition, held in Salt Rock on Saturday.

The fifth edition of the annual cook-out has been hosted by Matt Coningham at his home since 2021. Last year, benevolent bidders raised more than R45 000, but this year’s event more than doubled that total.

Olé! Team ‘Taco Libre’s’ Quintin Keenan, Debbie Swart, Wendy Bouwer, Carmen Keenan, Chimene de Vos, Nikki Bishop and Brigette Richardson.

Fourteen teams competed for culinary supremacy, with team ‘Yellowstoned’ taking top honours with 226 points out of 250. ‘Taco Libre’ finished tantalisingly close in second with 224 points, just two behind. Third place – and the only other team to score more than 200 points – went to ‘uMSAGA’ with 201.

Each year, the event grows in scale and spirit. Orphan Fund fundraising coordinator Charmaine Premlal thanked Coningham and all participants for their ongoing support.

The sweet transvestites of ‘The Rocky Horrow Potjie Show’ did the time warp in 10th: From left, Tash Wheal, Leah Shone, Anje, Willem and Delia Laas, with Stephanie Higgs, Murray Mackenzie and Sonja Potgieter.

“The Swan and Seasnake Potjie and Punch Party fundraiser was a resounding success! The money raised will go directly towards our programmes and outreach efforts,” she said.

“The food was delicious food, the atmosphere vibrant, and the shared spirit of giving and community made for an unforgettable day. A heartfelt thank you to Matt and his family for generously hosting the event and a big thank you to the participants and generous donors who joined us to help turn this event into a meaningful celebration of community and compassion.”
