Images to inspire at the Ballito Photo Club

The April meeting of the club drew some excellent photos from the ever-growing community.

April’s Ballito Photo Club meeting showcased 77 striking images from 46 photographers during the monthly competition at Simbithi Country Club.

The evening began with the annual AGM, followed by image presentations judged by Johannesburg-based photographer Bruna Mentrup. She selected winners across categories and named the overall junior and senior champions.

Brian Roberts: “Moths to light”

The club uses a ranking system from the Photographic Society of South Africa, where higher-ranked photographers are judged more strictly. Members begin as one-star, with rankings based on competition scores – one to three for juniors, and four and above for seniors.

The set subject was “Repetition”, won by Brian Roberts for Moths to Light. Mentrup said it was a “beautiful illustration of repetition” that suited the theme exceptionally well. Roberts also took top honours in the Mono category with Drinking Zebras.

Caro Smith: “Out of Africa”

Caro Smith won both the Visual Art category and overall senior title with Out of Africa. Mentrup praised the work as thoughtfully crafted and “nailed creatively”.

Nicolette Forbes was named overall junior winner and topped the Nature (birds only) category with Ready or Not – Here I Come. Mentrup commended its sharpness, composition and interaction between the vultures. Forbes also won the Colour Open category with Night Lights.

Chairperson Rung Button said the club had grown into a diverse community of photographers, from beginners to seasoned professionals.

Nicola Paul: “Hang in there”

“The external judge gave valuable feedback, helping members to grow their skills,” she said.
