Riders honour late farmer with launch of Glendale Off-Road Club

Following his tragic death in July 2017, club members rallied to preserve his legacy and protect the land he had shared so generously.

The former home of murdered Glendale farmer Bob Gawler is now a home to the biking community he embraced.

On Saturday, the Glendale Off-Road Club was officially launched, formalising years of informal riding on local trails – and paying tribute to a man who once opened his land to off-road enthusiasts.

Riders came out in numbers to have fun on Saturday.

For years, Gawler, a respected farmer in the area, welcomed riders onto his property. Following his tragic death in July 2017, club members rallied to preserve his legacy and protect the land he had shared so generously.

One of the riders is riding up one of the toughest mountains to climb in Glendale.

More than just a riding club, the group has long supported the local community through annual Christmas gift and winter blanket drives, as well as computer donations to nearby schools. Their strong relationship with residents has been key in maintaining access to trails around Glendale.

At Saturday’s launch, committee member Lee “Mr Dog” Ramsden shared the story behind saving Gawler’s former home – now affectionately known as “Bob’s”.

When the property was placed on the market, riders knew urgent action was needed to secure one of South Africa’s premier off-road areas. Several emergency meetings were held, and negotiations with the seller began.

Despite the odds, an agreement was reached – but raising the required R800 000 proved challenging. Of the 240 riders contacted, 68 stepped up with financial contributions, some donating more than once.

“There are too many people to thank, including those whose suggestions, even when critical, helped us improve. Our children will benefit from this legacy,” said Ramsden.

To date, more than R1.3-million has been invested into transforming the property, made possible through donations, sponsorships and support from business partners.
