Sheffield 80-year-old woman stands up against alleged beach assault
The woman was allegedly manhandled by a passerby after their dogs got into a fight and had to be separated.
An 80-year-old North Coast woman has opened a criminal case after allegedly being verbally abused and assaulted on Sheffield beach during a dog attack incident.
The incident occurred two weeks ago while the woman was walking her dog in the late afternoon. According to her statement, another dog attacked her pet, prompting the other dog’s owner to separate the animals by dragging them into the ocean.
The situation reportedly escalated when the man turned aggressive toward the woman, allegedly shouting insults, manhandling and threatening her.
The woman laid charges at Umhlali Saps, assisted by members of the Umhlali Community Policing Forum (CPF).
CPF chairperson, Josha Daniel, confirmed his involvement and said the CPF supported her in opening the case with Captain PJ Bisschoff.
“The CPF and all stakeholders maintain a firm stance of zero tolerance toward any form of abuse or violence,” said Daniel.
iLembe Saps spokesperson, Captain Alex Thomson, confirmed that the suspect has been charged with malicious damage to property, crimen injuria and common assault.
“The suspect made a first court appearance and is due to appear again on May 27,” said Thomson.
The woman’s dog has since recovered, and she has resumed her regular walks on the beach.
