Ballito Photo Club entries prove a picture is worth a thousand words

The club's May competition offered up a stunning array of images which speak for themselves.

Storytelling met shutter speed at Simbithi, where 97 entries vied for top honours in the Ballito Photo Club’s dazzling May photo showdown.

The competition produced an excellent array of entries across various categories, highlighting the talent and creativity of the club’s members. Each category follows specific editing and format rules, including whether images should be submitted in colour or monochrome (black and white).

The club adheres to the Photographic Society of South Africa’s ranking system, where photographers are graded by star level. Beginners start at one star, progressing through ranks based on competition scores – up to three stars for junior members, and four or more for seniors. Higher-ranked photographers are judged more strictly.

Set subject and best overall junior winner – “Reading by Candlelight” by Lorna Cooke.

An accredited national photography judge assessed this month’s entries, focusing on technical quality – such as sharpness, lighting, composition and creative depth of field – as well as the all-important ability to tell a story. Members are required to enter at least ten photographs per year to remain in good standing.

Category winners for May were as follows:

The prize for the Nature category (excluding birds) went to Brian Roberts with ‘Dragonfly’.

The set subject, “Candle Lit,” was won by Lorna Cooke for Reading by Candlelight. Cooke also earned the overall junior title.

Caro Smith was named overall senior winner and also won the Colour Open category with At the Waterhole.

“Gloomy beach scape” by Rung Button.
