“I am very happy about the nomination. It feels like all my hard work has been rewarded,” said Mangaliso. “And after learning about who Simon ‘Mabhunu’ Sabela was, I truly feel honoured.”
Her journey began in 2022 when her mother, Zama Kheswa, spotted a casting call and encouraged her to audition. A self-recorded video was sent to producers, and just weeks later, she landed the role.
Filming began in December 2023, marking her first on-screen appearance. Since the show’s release, Mangaliso has quickly gained national attention, with fans praising her on social media and dubbing her the face of a new era in local entertainment.
“Tweets like ‘Mangaliso Aluta Mthembu. A star is born.’ have gone viral,” said her proud father, Xolani Mthembu.
“It’s already a win for me. For her first role to result in such recognition is incredible.”
The Simon “Mabhunu” Sabela Awards, named after South Africa’s first black film director and legendary actor, celebrate achievements in the performing arts. Sabela was best known for his roles in Zulu and Zulu Dawn.
Outside of acting, Mangaliso remains an energetic all-rounder, involved in cycling, singing, writing and horse-riding, and even choreographing her own dance routines.
Her parents believe this is just the beginning for the young star.
“She’s talented, hardworking and humble. We are excited to see where this journey leads,” said Kheswa.
