Taxi fares to increase by between R2 and R10 from July 1
Taxi associations from Tongaat to KwaDukuza say increases are necessary because of rising costs.
Commuters across the North Coast will have to dig deeper into their pockets as taxi fares are set to increase from July 1.
The fare adjustments will affect both short- and long-distance trips. According to Dolphin Coast Taxi Association notices, local trips will increase by R2, while long-distance fares will go up by as much as R5.
For example:
• Ballito to KwaDukuza: increasing from R26 to R28.
• Ballito to Tongaat: from R22 to R24.
• Ballito to Etete: from R20 to R22.
• Ballito to Groutville, Melville, Thembeni: rising to R24.
• Salt Rock to Groutville, Malende, Thembeni: R24.
• All stop-to-stop trips: now R15.
Longer trips will also cost more with Ballito to Durban increasing to R45 and Ballito to Gateway or Verulam to R35.
For a commuter travelling daily between Stanger and Ballito, the fare increase means an additional R120 per week (five working days) – from R1 560 to R1 680 per month.
Meanwhile, the Siqalokuhle Taxi Association in Tongaat has also announced fare increases ranging between R1 and R3 for local routes, and up to R10 for long-distance trips. Tongaat to Ballito increases from R22 to R24, Tongaat to Stanger is R40 and Tongaat to Durban is now R34.
The fare increases come amid ongoing pressures on taxi operators due to rising fuel and maintenance costs.
