Food feats and drink delights as Man vs Food returns to Mozambik

The popular annual food challenge event acts as a fundraiser for Sables Creatures.

Laughter echoed, glasses clinked and the smell of sizzling food filled the air at Mozambik Ballito last Wednesday night, as locals gathered for the annual Man vs Food Challenge.

The atmosphere was charged by friendly rivalry as competitors performed outrageous eating feats, including the men’s and women’s boat races, the ladies’ Alopop Down, a pickled egg eating contest and a fiery chilli vodka shot challenge.

Winner of the pickled egg challenge, Thuli Mzobe.

But nothing would compare to the main event: The Da Wors Challenge – two metres of wors, served with two balls of pap and a bowl of tomato and onion gravy – this was a test of sheer stamina that had the crowd roaring with encouragement.

The winner in action, Andrew Douglas.

Behind all the fun was a heartfelt cause. Proceeds from the evening went to local non-profit Sables Creatures Animal Rescue.

“Sables Creatures would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Brett Michielin, Diogo Barendse and all the dedicated staff involved for so generously hosting the Man vs Food fundraising event in support of our organisation. We are truly grateful for your ongoing generosity and support,” said Rose van Rensburg from Sables Creatures.

Winners of the ladies alopop boat race, Elcozette Enslin and Tamlyn Zietsman.

She also expressed appreciation for the continued support shown by the Ballito community.

“Thank you for showing up, giving back and making a real difference. Because of your kindness and generosity, we are able to settle a large portion of our vet bills and continue our mission to improve the lives of animals in the surrounding areas. Your support enables us to host sterilisation clinics, provide vaccinations, supply food and offer medical support to animals in need,” she said.
