How to reframe childhood learning with NLP life coach, May Coomer
A pursuit of perfection often creates an obstacle, which the joy of learning can unlock.
Joy is often mistaken for happiness.
Happiness depends on circumstances, but joy is deeper. Joy can exist even in the struggle – a calm confidence that growth is possible, that effort has value, that challenges have meaning.
Educational pioneer Charlotte Mason wrote, “The atmosphere of the home is the chief part of the child’s education.” The same applies to the classroom. The tone we set – whether rushed, critical or hopeful – shapes not just behaviour, but the willingness to learn. Only in an atmosphere of joy are we truly attuned to growth.
As an NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and life coaching perspective reminds us, we are constantly modelling states of mind. Children absorb not just what we say, but how we show up. If we carry tension, they learn tension. If we cultivate joy, they learn resilience.

Practical ways to nurture joy in home and classroom:
1. Reframe struggle as growth. Instead of “This is too hard,” shift language to “This is how we grow.”
2. Anchor joyful states. Simple rituals – a morning song, a shared gratitude moment, a deep breath before lessons – create positive associations with learning.
3. Focus on strengths, not just gaps. Acknowledge effort and small wins. Recognition fuels confidence and motivation.
4. Model mindfulness. Pause before reacting. Children mirror emotional regulation.
5. Invite playfulness. Humour, creativity and even silliness keep energy light and minds open.
At home, joy might look like turning chores into games or reading together without rushing. In class, it might be pausing to celebrate a student’s idea or weaving laughter into a tough subject.
Joy does not erase struggle, but it changes how we meet it. When children see that learning is not about perfection but about discovery, they develop the resilience to keep going.
To cultivate joy is not to ignore reality, but to enrich it. It is the quiet strength that says: Even here, even now, we can grow, together.
