Pedestrian killed, four seriously injured in separate N2 crashes

ANC KZN Youth League deputy-chairperson Phindile Mdanda was among those injured.

A pedestrian was tragically killed during a two-car accident on the N2 near Zinkwazi last night.

The accident happened in the northbound lane just before 10pm and also left two people seriously injured.

One of the two cars involved is owned by the ANC’s General Gizenga Mpanza regional office, as confirmed by regional party spokesperson, Lucky Makhathini.

The ANC regional bakkie was one of two cars in the accident.

Just a few minutes earlier, another prominent ANC member was critically injured in a two-car collision in the southbound lane of the N2 near the Mvoti Bridge.

Makhathini confirmed that Phindile Mdanda – the ANC KZN Youth League deputy-chairperson – was rushed to hospital after being treated by paramedics.

“The driver of the first vehicle [Mdanda] was found to be in a critical condition and trapped within the wreckage,” said IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson, Samantha Meyrick.

“While under the care of IPSS Medical Rescue Advanced Life Support paramedics, she was extricated by KwaDukuza Fire Department and IPSS Search & Rescue.”

The driver of the second car was also seriously injured.

The two accidents come just over a week after five members of an Ndwedwe family were killed in a collision between Amatikulu and Dokodweni, prompting renewed calls for safety measures on the N2 north of KwaDukuza.
