Shakaville debut author turns pain into purpose
Matric pupil Samukelisiwe Ntenga is using her experience with mental health struggles to help her peers.
Eighteen-year-old Samukelisiwe Ntenga is preparing to launch her first book this month, a raw, faith-driven guide to overcoming mental illness.
The young author from Shakaville hopes her debut, Finding Your Voice, will serve not just as a personal testimony, but as a lifeline to others navigating similar struggles.
“Many people suffering from mental illness end up dying because they don’t have the right support or guidance,” she said.
“Through my book, I want to be a friend or support buddy to anyone going through a hard time.”
Samukelisiwe’s journey is one of deep resilience. Born visually impaired, she is completely blind in her left eye and recently learned she is losing vision in her right eye.

Her teenage years were marked by emotional turmoil, giving her first-hand insight into the pain of isolation.
“There was a time when I was severely mentally ill. It took me a long time to recover. I understand the value of support and with this book, I want to remind others: you are not alone.”
The book will be launched on August 29 at Arthur Blaxall School in Pietermaritzburg, where she is currently completing matric.
“This book is a big part of my life story, a journey through pain, healing, faith and purpose,” she said.
“It’s not just a testament of faith, but a guide to living fully. I write about accepting disability, overcoming mental illness and extending a helping hand through the wisdom God has given me.”
For Samukelisiwe, Finding Your Voice is more than a book, it’s a bridge between her journey and the hearts of others still searching for hope.
