KwaDukuza Saps named iLembe’s best station at district police awards

The station recorded a decline in contact crimes, an improved detection rate and 633 arrests over the past year.

Dedication and courage were honoured at the iLembe Saps Commissioner’s Excellence Awards, where top officers and staff received recognition for outstanding service.

The ceremony, held at the Relax Inn Hotel and Conference Venue on August 29, brought together cops, stakeholders and community representatives to acknowledge the men and women who uphold safety and justice in the district.

Man of the year: Sergeant Clement Pillay (second left) with Major General Nosipho Madondo, Major General Anthony Gopaul and Captain Nhlaliyenza Mahlobo.

Sergeant Clement Pillay was named Man of the Year for his dedication to community safety, including stepping in during staff shortages and ensuring that gender-based violence cases received urgent and compassionate attention.

Member living with disability of the year, admin Clerk Nokonwaba Rejoice Mtsolo with Major General Nosipho Madondo and Major General Anthony Gopaul.

Captain Sphiwo Kunene received the award for Woman of the Year, as well as provincial and district recognition for her leadership in human resource development, commitment to community upliftment projects and consistent demonstration of professional excellence.

Detective Member of the Year, level 5-7: Detective Constable Thandeka Lucia Buthelezi with Nqobani Sibiya, iLembe district youth crime prevention desk chairperson and major General Anthony Gopaul. Buthelezi won both provincial first place and district first place.

Detective Constable Thandeka Lucia Buthelezi was honoured as Detective of the Year, also winning at both district and provincial level. She is known for meticulous case preparation and effective collaboration with justice departments, which have led to consistent convictions in serious cases, including violent crime and murder dockets.

Woman of the year: Captain Sphiwo Kunene receiving an award from Major General Nosipho Madondo, Lt Colonel Boneli Ncube and Major General Anthony Gopaul. She also won both provincial first place and district first place.

Administrative clerk Nokonwaba Rejoice Mtsolo was recognised as Member Living with a Disability of the Year, for her resilience, organisational ability and invaluable support to the district commissioner’s office. She also received the award at both district and provincial level.

KwaDukuza Saps was named Station of the Year for the district, recognised from among 10 stations, recording a decline in reported contact crimes, an improved detection rate, and 636 arrests in the past financial year. The station was also commended for its role in high-profile investigations and ongoing operations against drugs and illegal firearms.
