KwaDukuza public libraries appeal for book donations
Public libraries are crucial hubs for communities.
KwaDukuza’s public libraries are calling on residents to help restock their shelves by donating new or gently used books, with growing demand for reading material – especially among schoolchildren.
Residents are encouraged to donate novels, children’s books and biographies they no longer need, provided they are in good condition and ideally published within the past three years.
“If book clubs or parents have new books that have already been read and are no longer needed, please consider donating directly to your local library,” said Shakila Singh, head librarian in Ballito.
KwaDukuza has six public libraries, which regularly rotate and share stock between branches. However, funding to purchase new books remains extremely limited.
“We have not received a single new book in the past year, aside from a few welcome donations from residents,” she said.
The call for support comes during National Book Week, commemorated from September 5 to 11, which aims to promote literacy and a love of reading across all age groups.
“Libraries remain a vital space for learning and discovery, but we need your help to keep our collections fresh and accessible.”
Residents are encouraged to drop off books at their nearest public library during opening hours on Monday to Friday: 9am-4.30pm and Saturday: 9am-12.30pm.
“A single book can open countless new worlds,” said Singh. “Donating even one could inspire a young mind and help strengthen a reading culture in our community.”
If you have books gathering dust at home, consider giving them a second life and help to nurture a lifelong love of reading.
