Gateway Nu Metro to open tomorrow with African-first ‘ScreenX’ cinema

The ScreenX cinema has three screens, together creating a 270-degree effect.

Nu Metro will open a new nine-screen cinema complex at Gateway Theatre of Shopping in Umhlanga tomorrow, which includes the first ScreenX cinema on the continent.

Nu Metro will take over the space previously occupied by Ster-Kinekor, which closed its Gateway branch on May 9 this year.

Among the highlights of the new complex is the panoramic ScreenX format that projects visuals across three walls for an immersive 270-degree effect.

Other options include VIP, 4DX, Scene Xtreme and a fun, multi-coloured Kidz Cinema, while lounge areas and in-cinema dining are on offer too.

“We’re incredibly proud of this acquisition and renovation. Nu Metro Gateway is more than just a cinema — it’s a showcase of our brand’s evolution,” said Nu Metro senior marketing manager, Beverley Govender.

“From the sleek new design to the immersive formats, every detail reflects our commitment to delivering unforgettable entertainment. This complex sets the benchmark for what the future of cinema should feel like.”

To mark the opening, Nu Metro is running a series of promotions, including discounted tickets for ScreenX at R100 during October, before the price increases to R220. Movies scheduled for the October run include F1, How to Train Your Dragon and Superman.

Nedbank Remax members will also be able to watch 2D movies for R20 during the opening weekend.

Tickets can be purchased at the cinema or online at numetro.co.za.
