Umhlali family fundraising in hopes of improving autistic son’s speech
The Manana family is hopeful that stem cell stem cell therapy could help Nhleleko’s (6) quality of life.
Six-year-old Nhleleko Manana is in need of life-changing stem cell therapy to help improve his communication and social interaction as a child living with autism.
Diagnosed at just three years old, little Nhleleko is known for his love of running, climbing jungle gyms, painting and playing with his toy cars. His bright spirit shines through as he navigates the daily challenges of living with autism.
His mother, Phumzile Manana, said the journey has been both challenging and rewarding.
“The hardest part of raising an autistic child is having to explain to society why your child behaves a certain way around people, as most are not educated about the condition,” she said.
The Umhlali family has launched a BackaBuddy campaign to help raise R93 000 for Nhleleko’s stem cell therapy.
“We love him deeply just as he is, but as parents, we dream of giving him every opportunity to grow, communicate and live life to his fullest potential,” said Phumzile.

“Stem cell therapy gives us hope that he might find new ways to express himself, experience the world with more ease and discover even more of the beautiful person he already is.”
According to Phumzile, the therapy could help reduce inflammation and regulate Nhleleko’s immune system, which in turn may support better behaviour, communication and social interaction.
She added that the campaign has brought the family closer together and renewed their hope for Nhleleko’s future.
“We know this is not a cure for autism, but many research studies and families report noticeable improvements. It helps autistic children by enhancing communication and social connection, key factors for our child,” she said.
