Emergency training for crèche supervisors improves child safety

Staff from more than 30 KwaDukuza crèches and ECD centres recently learnt first aid and fire safety.

More than 30 KwaDukuza crèches and early development centres are now better equipped to handle emergencies, thanks to a recent interactive safety training course.

Teachers and mentors from the centres, caring for a combined 2 500 children, received first aid and fire safety training at the Restore Africa Foundation’s Safety4Kids Day, hosted at the Shaka Garden Centre in Chaka’s Rock on October 1.

Among those attending were The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund beneficiaries: Nkobongo Resource Centre (Nkobongo), Enduduzweni Community Care Centre (Melville), Siyakhula Crèche (Shaka’s Head) and Yilolelidwala and Siyakhula crèches (Groutville).

Participants took part in demonstrations on how to use the contents of a first-aid kit, while members of the KwaDukuza Fire Department trained them to operate fire extinguishers and fire blankets.

Trinity Nyathi from Yilolelidwala said she felt far more confident handling an emergency after the training.

“This is crucial in providing immediate care and potentially preventing further complications,” she said.

Restore Africa Foundation founder, Eduard Louw, thanked event sponsors Shaka Garden Centre, Round Table 221, Spar Ballito Village, Avis, IPSS and AquilaCorp for their support.

Louw also appealed for donations of fire extinguishers, saying many centres still lacked adequate safety equipment.

“We want to ensure every childcare facility has access to working fire extinguishers and basic emergency tools at all times,” he said.
