North Coast boutique hotel earns SA’s highest hospitality rating

Sala Beach House joins the Oyster Box as the only two 5 star premium locations in KZN.

A Ballito boutique hotel has become the first hotel on the North Coast to receive South Africa’s elite 5-star premium status award.

Sala Beach House was presented with the rare honour by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA) on October 29, placing it among just 23 establishments nationwide – and only two in KZN – to receive this prestigious certification. TGCSA is South African Tourism’s official quality assurance body.

Properties that exceed the benchmark for 5-star grading are awarded premium status. Criteria include the quality of facilities and services, cleanliness, safety, value for money and customer service.

Sala Beach House owner, Craig Rutherfoord.

Craig Rutherfoord, owner of the Thompson’s Bay hotel, said the recognition reflects the team’s commitment to delivering exceptional service.

“We are providing guests with experiences that are unique and special,” said Rutherfoord.

“Hoteliers have this need to keep people happy; that’s how we survive and flourish. But it is quite a daunting award, because we have to maintain this extremely high standard.”

Rutherfoord said Sala was designed to offer a boutique residential escape.

“We tried to reimagine what luxury is on the North Coast. It is about comfort and authenticity. Our job is to take away stress and enhance wellness, to make people feel good.”

TGCSA’s chief quality assurance officer, Bronwen Auret, explained the significance of the award.

“This award is an extremely limited certification that we provide to establishments,” said Auret.

“This accolade shows how KZN is ready to accept international travellers and compete with the rest of the country.”

Rung Button, Sheffield resident and KZN Tourism and Film Authority deputy chairperson, said: “This award puts the stamp of excellence on the region.”

Mduduzi Zulu, KwaDukuza municipality’s local economic development and tourism manager, congratulated Sala and emphasised tourism’s role in developing the coastal economy.

“Tourism is a key focus for the municipality because it contributes immensely to economic growth, job creation and local economic development,” said Zulu.
