Willard Beach ablutions renovated with community support and artistic flair
The upgrades form part of the successful Adopt-a-Beach project.
The ablution facilities at Willard Beach have recently received a fresh new look, thanks to a community-funded renovation led by residents and supported by the municipality.
The project includes a creative twist – decorated surfboards installed on bathroom doors, each sponsored by a community member. The idea was conceptualised by local artist Karien van der Wal, who also volunteered her time to paint the boards.

According to Bev Mileham, one of the residents behind the Adopt-a-Beach Project, the Willard bathrooms were well maintained over the festive season, aside from the usual mess left over from busy beach days.
“There is still room for improvement, but we have had some really positive feedback over the holidays,” said Mileham.

Mileham teamed up with Melanie Manson, founder of the Ballito Official App, to co-ordinate the effort, with assistance from the KwaDukuza municipality, which helped replace a few toilet seats. The project also received a generous donation of mirrors from Mica.

“It is going to look awesome! Hopefully the boards will be up in the next two weeks,” said Mileham, noting that they plan to secure the surfboards to prevent theft.
Looking ahead, Mileham hopes to install a foot spa at the Willard facilities, allowing beachgoers to rinse off before entering, helping to keep the space cleaner for others.
The group plans to continue their efforts by renovating the bathrooms at Clarke Bay, as part of the ongoing Adopt-a-Beach Project.
