Injured Durban spear fisherman grateful for support after Sheffield boat accident
Mark Wright has a fracture in his leg and multiple deep lacerations.
Durban spear fisherman Mark Wright is recovering at home after a Sheffield boat accident that left him with a fractured fibula, a cracked heel and deep lacerations to his leg and head.
The 37-year-old, a long-term water sports enthusiast, said he was swimming, towing two buoys, out to a reef north of Christmas Bay on the morning of January 31 when the accident occurred.
“All of a sudden I was knocked underwater and trying to figure out what had happened,” said Wright.
After first aid was administered on the boat, Wright was brought to shore at Salmon Bay and stabilised by paramedics. He was taken to General Justice Gizenga Mpanza Regional Hospital in KwaDukuza, before being released on the same day as the accident.
“I am at home now and able to get around on crutches, but there is still almost constant pain,” he said.
“It has been hard for me because I am sporty and normally like to go surfing or diving almost every day. I was also scheduled to take a job as a lifeguard on cruise ships later this month, which has now stalled until I am physically fit enough to do it.”
Doctors expect it will take between six and eight weeks before Wright is fully mobile again. Adding to the stress, he does not have medical insurance and is also dealing with mounting bills. To that end, a BackaBuddy page started by his sister Alex Thyssen has been a huge help.
“I really appreciate the outpouring of support I have received from everyone, whether financial or through messages,” he said.
“I also appreciate the fact that I’m still here.”
While the BackaBuddy page had reached 91% of its R40 000 goal at the time of print, fundraising will continue. Wright said the extent of his injuries and required treatment were not clear when the initial target amount was set.
