Salt Rock Nippers set sights on world championships

Every Sunday morning, about 100 children gather on Salt Rock Beach to take part in structured training sessions focused on ocean safety, fitness, discipline and respect for the sea.

Salt Rock Nippers aims to compete at the upcoming World Lifesaving Championships in Qgeberha, marking an exciting new chapter for the well-known coastal initiative.

To qualify for the international event, the club is in the process of re-registering with Lifesaving South Africa (LSA).

According to chairperson Fiona Carleton Trytsman, this step is essential to restore the club’s formal status and revive its proud lifesaving legacy on the North Coast.

“This is a very exciting chapter that will give local children confidence in the ocean, build self-esteem and train the next generation of lifesavers,” said Trytsman.

Salt Rock’s beaches have long been treasured by the community and the Nippers programme plays a key role in ensuring young people enjoy the ocean safely and responsibly. Every Sunday morning, about 100 children gather on Salt Rock Beach to take part in structured training sessions focused on ocean safety, fitness, discipline and respect for the sea.

The Salt Rock Lifesaving Club was founded in the early 1990s and has a strong history of developing young swimmers and future lifeguards.

Although the club is currently not formally affiliated with Lifesaving South Africa, the Nippers programme has continued through the dedication of volunteers and community support.

With South Africa set to host the World Lifesaving Championships in 2026, the event presents an opportunity for local lifeguards to compete on an international stage.

To support future growth, Salt Rock Nippers is also working towards securing a permanent base. A clubhouse would allow for the proper storage of watercraft and safety equipment, improve weekly training sessions and better support the professional lifeguards who serve the area.

Talks with the municipality are ongoing regarding the possible leasing of part of the beach facility. To join the nippers, visit www.saltrocknippers.co.za and fill the registering form.
