Ballito charity Woman on a Mission steps up for struggling families

The charity is focused on helping underprivileged families access education this year.

A small lockdown initiative has grown into a powerful community lifeline.

Woman on a Mission, founded by Patricia Howes and co-led by Sonet Page, provides essential support to women and children facing crisis, from food parcels and school fee assistance to trauma recovery when needed.

With the help of volunteers Yupin Suemanotham and Lindiwe Sithole, the non-profit operates out of its Sandra Road store in Ballito Village. The shop is more than a retail space; it is the centre of a community lifeline, where people can be clothed and fed, depending on their circumstances.

Howes’ background with Girls and Boys Town South Africa has shaped the charity’s hands-on, no-red-tape approach.

“Helping people is a calling,” said Howes.

“Our mission is to establish a sustainable support network to empower and uplift members of our community, restoring dignity and hope to struggling individuals, families and single parents.”

One of Woman on a Mission’s biggest focuses this year is education. Howes and Page are supporting several single parents who are unable to pay school fees. Last year, the organisation stepped in when a mother was told her child could not return to school until the outstanding fees were settled.

“Along with a Back-a-Buddy campaign, we managed to pay the fees this way and we commited to cover this year’s fees as well,” said Patricia.

Inside the store, the team has set up a shelf dedicated to another child they are assisting and donated items are sold to fund the schooling costs.

However, running the charity comes with challenges, the biggest being transport. Howes and Page frequently borrow vehicles from friends and family to move donated goods. They are appealing to the community for assistance in reaching their goal of acquiring a bakkie.

“You will be surprised at how many people are struggling and need help,” said Page.

Anyone wishing to donate goods, funds or a much-needed bakkie can contact Patricia on 082 418 9648 or triciahowes@gmail.com.
