CANSA reignites HPV vaccination drive ahead of world awareness day

HPV is one of the leading causes of cervical cancer.

CANSA is urging parents to vaccinate their daughters against HPV as South Africa prepares to mark Human Papillomavirus Awareness Day on March 4.

Cervical cancer remains one of the country’s leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women, with more than

10 000 new cases and nearly 6 000 deaths recorded annually. Health authorities have aligned with the World Health Organisation’s strategy to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health threat by 2030 through prevention, early detection and timely treatment.

South Africa has adopted the WHO-recommended single-dose HPV vaccine schedule for girls aged 9 to 14, following evidence that one dose offers effective protection. Girls aged 15 to 20 may receive one or two doses, while women living with HIV are advised to receive three doses, where possible.

“Vaccinating girls before they are exposed to HPV is one of the most powerful tools we have to prevent cervical cancer,” said CANSA national manager of health programmes, Lorraine Govender.

CANSA is encouraging parents and caregivers to consent to vaccination during school campaigns. The organisation also stressed the importance of regular screening.

HPV DNA testing and Pap smears can detect precancerous changes early, when treatment is most effective, particularly for women living with HIV, who face a higher risk.

Govender said co-ordinated action across communities, schools and health services is essential to reduce cervical cancer rates and protect future generations.
