A safe space for children in Thembeni with the Isinakekelo Care Centre

The centre provides food, shelter, education support and access to healthcare, while creating a safe place for the children to simply play and 'be kids'.

A grassroots project in Thembeni township is making a meaningful difference by creating a safe, nurturing space for underprivileged children.

Isinakekelo Care Centre operates under the Isinakekelo Foundation, a registered non-profit organisation founded seven years ago. The foundation initially focused on assisting the elderly, but it quickly became clear that many elderly beneficiaries were also caring for vulnerable children who needed additional support. The foundation’s mission widened to incorporate them and the care centre was established.

The centre is committed to protecting the constitutional rights of children by providing basic necessities such as food, shelter, education support and access to healthcare, while creating a safe place for the children to simply play and ‘be children’. The foundation also offers counselling, mentorship and emotional support to help children build self-esteem.

Plans are in place to expand educational and development programmes that promote cognitive, social and life skills.

In December 2025, several organisations partnered to support the centre. Waltons, Pick n Pay Ballito and The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund donated six tables and 24 chairs, allowing children to comfortably complete activities and share meals.

The North Coast Courier also donated 14 single beds, comprising seven sets of bunk beds, along with mattresses. This donation significantly improved the sleeping arrangements for the 12 children who stay at the centre. The centre also supports more than 30 children who come in daily for a meal after school.

Further support came from BBS Mica, which donated primer, paint and paintbrushes to the value of almost R4 000 to assist with upgrading the centre’s facilities.

“We are deeply grateful for all the support we receive through the Orphan Fund. Honestly, without this help, I do not know how we would continue caring for the children and elderly who rely on us every day. There are truly no words to describe the impact made by the Courier and we will be forever thankful,” said founder Wendy Monyango.

Through continued community support and partnerships, Isinakekelo Care Centre remains focused on creating a safe and nurturing environment, protecting children from abuse, neglect and exploitation.
