Temporary lane closures on the N2 at uMngeni Interchange for the next month
Parapets and the median barriers between lanes will be replaced.
KwaZulu-Natal motorists should prepare for over a month of delays as major repair works get underway at the uMngeni Interchange tomorrow (March 12).
The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) said there will be a series of temporary lane closures on the N2, affecting both northbound and southbound traffic. Construction is scheduled to run until April 15.
According to Sanral KZN Project Manager, Serisha Sukraj, phase 1 of the project involves the replacement of parapets along the length of the uMngeni Bridge on the northbound on‑ramp from the N2.
Similar work will also take place on the southbound on‑ramp from Inanda Road. In addition, the median barriers separating the N2’s northbound and southbound lanes will be demolished and replaced as part of efforts to strengthen the interchange’s structural integrity.
“As part of the bridge repair works, several temporary lane closures will be implemented at the interchange and on its immediate feeder roads within the defined construction area,” said Sukraj.
“These closures will occur at different stages to enable essential maintenance activities aimed at preserving and improving the region’s road infrastructure.”
Closures will be implemented sequentially, beginning with the northbound N2 off‑ramp, followed by the southbound N2 on‑ramp from Inanda Road, the southbound fast lane on the N2 and finally the northbound fast lane.
Lane Closures
- Northbound N2 off-ramp: Temporary lane closures will occur on the flyover from Springfield Park, as well as on the N2 glide-on onto the off-ramp, along the bridge over the uMngeni River and beyond the bridge.
- Southbound N2 on-ramp from Inanda Road: Temporary lane closures will occur on the approach to the bridge over the uMngeni River, along the bridge and beyond the bridge.
- Southbound fast lane on the N2: Temporary lane closures will take place along the southbound fast lanes of the N2.
- Northbound fast lane on the N2: Temporary lane closures will take place along the northbound fast lanes of the N2.
Throughout the construction period, traffic will be funneled through narrowed lanes. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, expect delays and allow extra travel time.
“We urge all motorists to adhere to posted road signage and observe the reduced speed limits when approaching and travelling through the construction zone,” added Sukraj.
“Compliance with these measures is critical to ensuring the safety of both road users and construction personnel during the ongoing repair works.”
