Tow trucks to remove illegally parked vehicles in Umdloti
Fines have so far proved ineffective at curbing traffic infringements in the community.
Illegally parked vehicles obstructing roads, pedestrian walkways and driveways in Umdloti will now be towed away.
The Umdloti Smart Village and eThekwini Metro Police are cracking down on illegal parking, a growing problem on weekends and holidays. The announcement follows a recent meeting between municipal officials and Smart Village representatives, where these concerns were raised.
Victor Zungu, spokesperson for eThekwini Metro Police, confirmed the municipality may issue an obstruction charge and tow vehicles found to be unlawfully parked or blocking traffic.
“Once a vehicle has been towed, the owner must report to the charge office and produce the vehicle logbook to verify ownership. Upon verification, the owner will pay a towing fee of R1 104. If the vehicle remains at the municipal pound overnight, a storage fee of R90 per day applies,” he said.
Umdloti Smart Village chairperson Debbie-Lee Gaines said vehicles blocking roads, verges, driveways and pedestrian paths cause congestion and safety risks, especially when joggers, parents with prams and other pedestrians are forced into traffic.
Service vehicles have also struggled to access streets such as South Beach Road and Margaret Bacon Avenue.
Umdloti Smart Village precinct manager Vicky Schnetler recently raised a stink because a Durban Solid Waste (DSW) truck could not drive up Margaret Bacon Avenue as cars were parked on both sides, leaving full bins standing in the sun.
Gaines said fines alone have not solved the problem.
“eThekwini Metro Police have always responded timeously, issuing fines to unlawfully parked vehicles. But many drivers simply tear them up and discard them, adding to street litter,” she said.
After talks with metro police, tow trucks will now remove vehicles causing serious obstruction or danger.
“Visitors are welcome to enjoy Umdloti’s beaches, forest trails and restaurants, but unlawful behaviour that affects others will have consequences,” said Gaines.
