Ballito author turns personal struggles into poetry collection

The collection was launched in Ballito last weekend.

Turning pain into poetry, a Ballito author is using her words to help others feel seen and understood.

Maseeha Kolia (29) has transformed her personal struggles into a self-published poetry collection, The Odyssey of a Woman, launched last Saturday at Ekhaya Guest House.

Kolia was raised in Durban before moving to KwaDukuza and later settling in Ballito. Her debut blends poetry and quotes inspired by themes similar in style to the works of Rumi.

Some of the people who gave Maseeha Kolia support throughout her journey, from the back, are Daniel Kuppasamy, Muhammed Patel and in the front are Maseeha’s mother, Khadija, Maseeha, Sanrika Sohadeo and Aletta Chinner.

It explores mental health challenges such as OCD and depression, alongside the emotional journey of womanhood.

“This is not just a book for women. It’s for anyone, male or female, young or old, who wants to feel understood.”

Although she began writing years ago, Kolia only pursued it seriously after encouragement from friends and family. With support from her aunt, also a writer, and feedback from other authors, she compiled her work into a book.

Crystal Matthew and Julie Davies.

The project began in 2023 and was completed in 2024, with nearly 100 copies printed so far. Readers have praised its honesty and emotional depth.

The collection draws from both personal experiences and the stories of others. For example, some pieces reflect on social issues such as poverty, greed and inequality in South Africa, while others question the meaning of freedom.

Kolia also shares her experience of living with obsessive-compulsive disorder, offering insight into daily challenges.

Tanesh Sabsankel and Viasha Rajaram.

“I want people to feel like they are not alone. Sometimes we all feel the same things, but not everyone can put it into words,” she said.

Now a full-time author, she hopes her work will reach a wider audience, particularly young people seeking connection and healing.
