Ballito nurse swaps hospital shifts for holistic wellness lounge
Nondumiso Mulungo developed a love for wellness after experiencing some issues during her pregnancy.
From busy hospital wards to a calming wellness space, Nondumiso Mulungo is redefining what it means to care for others.
For most of her career, the 37-year-old professional nurse from KwaSwayimana, Pietermaritzburg, worked in hospital wards and government clinics, guiding patients and supporting new mothers through life-changing moments.
Mulungo began her nursing career in the maternity ward at the Church of Scotland Hospital in Tugela Ferry, where she worked closely with expectant mothers.
“Working with pregnant women made me realise how important primary healthcare and education are,” she said.
She later specialised in primary healthcare at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and went on to serve at clinics across KwaDukuza, including in Ballito. Over time, she became known for her dedication to educating young women about their health and wellbeing.
Upon becoming a mother herself, her path took a new direction.
Balancing the demands of nursing with family life proved challenging, leading her to step back and reconsider her next move.
“I love nursing, but the stress and long hours were difficult as a new mom,” she said.
Her own pregnancy, and the challenges she experienced, including skin concerns, renewed her passion for wellness and self-care.
Instead of opening a traditional clinic, Mulungo chose a different route. She started her own business, launching Nonny’s Wellness & IV Lounge at Preash Park, on Garlicke Drive in Ballito, a space focused on helping people take a more proactive approach to their health and wellbeing. The centre offers a range of treatments, including nano- and microneedling, DMK facials, ionic foot detox, back massages and IV vitamin therapy, all tailored to individual needs.
For her, the transition is not a departure from nursing, but an evolution of it.
“I still want to help people feel better and take care of themselves,” she said.
As she settles into this new chapter, Mulungo hopes her journey will inspire others, especially mothers, to embrace change and prioritise balance while continuing to care for those around them.
