Klerksdorp man dies after collapsing at Westbrook Beach

Lifeguards and family members tried to help but it was too late.

A holiday turned tragic on Monday as a father tried in vain to save his 38-year-old son after he collapsed in the surf at Westbrook Beach.

Marion Neser, from Klerksdorp, was visiting the coast with his parents, his girlfriend and her seven-year-old son. Shortly after entering the water, he experienced shortness of breath and attempted to return to shore, collapsing in the shorebreak in front of his family.

His father, Hein Neser, was among those who rushed to act, calling lifeguards and attempting to help as CPR was performed.

“I tried to assist with mouth-to-mouth while giving them space. Paramedics arrived shortly after, but sadly it was too late. My son was gone.”

Neser, who worked as a guide at the Black Rhino Lodge in the Pilanesberg, had a history of heart problems and was on chronic medication for high blood pressure. He also underwent heart surgery as a child.

Despite this, his death came as a shock to the family.

Hein Neser thanked those who responded.

“We are deeply grateful to the lifeguards, paramedics, a security officer and the many strangers who tried to assist. Their kindness meant a great deal to our family during this difficult time,” he said.

The family is preparing for Neser’s cremation before returning home.
