Nearly 100 images featured at Ballito Photo Club’s February event

The monthly gathering brings out the best of the local photographic community.

The Ballito Photo Club’s February competition at Simbithi Country Club delivered an inspiring mix of education, creativity and friendly competition, drawing strong attendance from across the photographic community.

The evening opened with a guest presentation on photographic opportunities on the island of St Helena, offering members a glimpse into its dramatic scenery and unique subject matter. This set the tone for a lively session featuring 96 competition images submitted by 46 members, displaying a wide range of styles and technical approaches.

Accomplished Gauteng photographer and judge Vivienne Murray presided over the competition, offering detailed feedback on each entry.

Sheltering Sky by Jacqueline Nel.

“Her comments on each photo were informative and will help members improve their skills,” said Ballito Photo Club chairperson Rung Button.

Dancing through Life by Andries Botha.

In the Mono category, Andries Botha’s image Dancing through Life earned top honours and secured him the overall monthly Junior title. Murray described it as “a wonderful high-key creative portrait,” praising the movement, focus and exposure, while suggesting a slight crop to strengthen composition.

Hamerkop Lunch by Johnny de Beer.

Avril Eshmade won the Nature (no birds) category with Watchful Leopard, noted for its “great impact” and the “perfect spotlight” created by a natural ray of sun. The Birds Only category went to Johnny de Beer for Hamerkop Lunch, commended for “brilliant action and impact” and strong subject-background separation.

Dandelion Highlights by Nicola Paul.

In Colour Open, Nicola Paul’s Dandelion Highlights impressed with its saturation, controlled exposure and “exquisite bokeh.”

Blue Slide by Shannon Clark.

Shannon Clark took the Photojournalism & Sport title with Blue Slide, a dynamic surfing image praised for its energy and composition. Jacqueline Nel won Scapes with Sheltering Sky, described as “a good reason for getting up early,” while the Set Subject (frames) and overall Senior award went to Brian Roberts for Always Look at the Bright Side, which Murray called “superbly conceptualised and executed.”

Rung secured the Visual Art category with Alleyway Restaurant, recognised for its “impactful and moody view” and well-controlled exposure.
