iLembe Saps police woman recognised for community impact
Priya Nunkumar has spent over a decade trying to help those in need.
A local police officer’s dedication to community upliftment has earned her provincial recognition.
iLembe police communications officer Priya Nunkumar (32) was named Influential Woman of the Year 2026 in the category of ‘Change Makers and Purpose-Driven Leaders’ at the Influential Awards 2026, held at the Sibaya iZulu Theatre last Saturday.
The event celebrates the top 100 influential men and women across the province, recognising leaders who inspire progress and positive change.
With more than 10 years in Saps, Nunkumar has built a career rooted in helping others.
She began as a columnist for the Stanger Weekly, guiding young people through bullying and social challenges, before moving into journalism and later police communications. Her role includes managing media communication for 10 police stations, but she goes beyond her job description.
She actively supports victims of domestic violence, assists with protection orders and participates in school campaigns and crime prevention initiatives.
Among her key contributions is the creation of the iLembe District Child Identification Booklet, a first for Saps.
The booklet helps parents record vital information about their children, assisting police in emergencies such as missing persons cases.
“I’ve seen how traumatic it is for parents when a child goes missing. This booklet helps provide critical details when they are too distressed to remember,” she said.
Her dedication has earned her several accolades, including multiple Saps excellence awards, the KZN Women’s Network Pro of the Year title and the Women of Wonder Award in 2022.
Nunkumar is also passionate about youth development. She leads school campaigns such as ‘Beat Bullying’ and educates children on safety and ‘stranger danger’.
“Whether it’s a victim in distress or a young person needing guidance, I am always ready to help,” she said.
She encouraged young women to follow their passion and strive to make a difference.
“Start small, believe in yourself and never stop reaching for your purpose,” she said.
