Roots survey reveals that Ballito locals are health conscious, but feeling the pinch
Preventative health care treatments and medical aid are both used at above average rates in Ballito.
New research shows Ballito residents are increasingly focused on wellness, but rising healthcare costs are shaping how they spend.
This was revealed to an intimate group of 26 health professionals hosted by the Courier at Workshop17 in Ballito Junction recently, where head Caxton researcher Lynne Krog presented key insights into the local wellness market.
These insights come from the Roots survey, South Africa’s largest independent community-level consumer study, conducted by Spark Media in partnership with Caxton Media. The study spans more than 100 communities and is based on over 25 000 interviews, offering a detailed view of local consumer behaviour, spending habits and lifestyle trends.

Local data, compiled on residents living between Ballito and Tinley Manor, reflects a strong shift towards preventative healthcare, with many residents investing in fitness, supplements and healthier lifestyles.
Medical aid uptake in Ballito remains higher than the national average, which shows both relative affluence and a growing focus on long-term wellbeing.
However, increasing healthcare costs are influencing behaviour. Many residents are reviewing or downgrading medical aid plans, while others are turning to gap cover and alternative insurance products to manage expenses.
The data also points to growing interest in vitamins, natural remedies and preventative treatments, particularly among younger residents.

Krog said these trends highlight a shift in how people approach their health.
“Consumers are becoming more proactive, but they are also more cost-aware. That balance is shaping decision-making,” she said.
For healthcare providers and businesses, the findings suggest increasing demand for services that are not only effective, but also accessible and affordable.
