Silent ‘trail boogie’ brings Earth Day to life at Simbithi Eco Estate

Residents of the estate enjoyed a fun reason to immerse themselves in nature.

A quiet forest walk turned into a vibrant dance as Simbithi residents celebrated Earth Day with a silent “trail boogie” along the Mfuleni Trail on Saturday.

The event, hosted in partnership with Secret Sunrise Durban, drew about 40 participants. On arrival at The Heron Community Centre, attendees were issued wireless headphones linked to facilitator Jax Taylor’s microphone and music feed.

Participants walked a section of the trail through the estate’s riverine forest, passing the Heron and Fish Eagle dams. While the group appeared quiet to passers-by, each person listened to the same pumping playlist while following guided movement prompts along the way.

Fish Eagle Dam marked the halfway point, where the guided dance session came alive. This was followed by a brief period of reflection and the return walk.

Taylor said the format is designed to combine physical activity with social interaction in an outdoor setting, while fostering a sense of community across different backgrounds and lifestyles.

Earth Day is observed annually on April 22. This year’s theme, ‘Our Power, Our Planet’, focused on renewable energy, community action and environmental responsibility.
