Psalms 91 NPO and volunteers take on N2 clean-up for Freedom Day

Teams cleaned the northbound on- and offramps at Ballito, Chaka's Rock, Salt Rock and Tinley Manor.

A Freedom Day clean-up saw volunteers tackle litter along key N2 interchanges on the North Coast.

Dozens of bags of litter were removed from the roadside by local NPO Psalms 91, with a 30-strong crowd cleaning the northbound on- and offramps at Ballito, Chaka’s Rock, Salt Rock and Tinley Manor. The group was made of members of the charity, sponsors and children from the Lisekhona Ithuba organisation in Thembeni.

Psalms 91 founder Thabiso Makhaye said they believe it is important to be part of the difference you want to see in the world.

“We wanted to do something that we could get our sponsors involved in and decided to tackle the huge amounts of litter that end up on the side of highways,” he said.

“It wouldn’t have been possible without the support of KDM traffic officers Chetty and Naidoo who helped keep everyone safe. Thanks also to IPSS Medical Rescue, Jannie Sounes, Hlengiwe Mndaweni, VW Ballito, Sanele MaNgidi Gcabashe, Siza Water, Kunjani Clinic, Umvoti Toll Plaza and Pick n Pay Stanger.”

The day ended at Siyakhula Creche in Shaka’s Head, where children enjoyed a jumping castle and a fun afternoon.

Psalms 91 was launched in 2024 by Makhaye, a Siza Water maintenance foreman, to support local charities, homes and orphanages that help children in need. It is a beneficiary of The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund.

The NPO is currently fundraising for a bakkie to assist with collections and drop-offs of donated goods around KwaDukuza. You can contact them at 062 194 8018, 069 219 7561, or email info@psalms91charity.co.za.
