iLembe contractor programme kicks off with focus on site safety

The programme aims to expand participation in the construction sector while strengthening quality, competitiveness and long-term sustainability.

A focus on safety and skills development marked the start of this year’s iLembe Emerging Contractors Programme at its opening session last week.

The annual programme began with an induction session at the iLembe Chamber offices, bringing together participants from across the district. The session included the first workshop on health and safety practices.

iLembe Chamber CEO Cobus Oelofse highlighted the programme’s role in driving industry transformation.

“The iECP is an important tool for broadening participation in the construction sector, improving standards and helping smaller contractors become competitive and sustainable,” he said.

He encouraged participants to fully engage, adding that the benefits depend on their commitment.

The programme aims to expand participation in the sector while strengthening quality, competitiveness and long-term sustainability. It focuses on building skills in technical delivery, business management, compliance and commercial awareness.

Master Builders membership manager Paula Leah outlined available support, including legal assistance, health and safety guidance, and compliance processes such as NHBRC registration and CIDB grading.

The programme is a collaboration between AVON Peaking Power, ENGIE Peakers Operations, Siza Water and Saryx Engineering Group through its HSEC Online platform, and is presented by Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal.
