Darnall Country Club fights for survival after loss of Tongaat Hulett funding

The club is hosting the "Save Our Club Golf Day" fundraiser on May 30 to help cover basic costs.

Darnall Country Club is facing a financial crisis after long-standing support from Tongaat Hulett was withdrawn at the beginning of the year.

Established in the 1930s and owned by Tongaat Hulett, the club serves as a community hub. In addition to the golf course, it offers tennis and squash courts, a bowling green, a swimming pool and the Miller’s Arms restaurant, the only dining venue in Darnall.

Club captain Gary Randall, a Blythedale resident who has been a member for 11 years, said the loss of funding has created a monthly shortfall of about R100 000.

Previously, Tongaat Hulett contributed towards course maintenance and staffing, while also covering electricity costs.

The club also has a snooker hall with two tables and a darts oche in the sports bar. Additional income streams include hosting weddings, hiring out the venue and organising sports-viewing events.

The Darnall Country Club snooker hall is a throwback to the club’s past grandeur.

Now operating in survival mode, the club is hosting the “Save Our Club Golf Day” fundraiser on May 30 to help cover basic costs.

“We have to fend for ourselves,” said Randall, who is a builder by trade.

“We are barely making ends meet – it’s a struggle.”

The club’s financial difficulties reflect broader economic challenges in the town.

A series of burglaries between May 10 and 12 saw 14 golf cart batteries stolen. The club was left with no option but to cut down pine trees to raise funds for replacements, although saplings will be replanted around the course.

“We rely heavily on community support, but it’s unpredictable because people are battling,” said Randall.

“There is a lack of money in the area and it’s affecting all businesses. Theft and vandalism have also been really bad.

“If anyone would like to come and play a game of golf, please come and help us out.”
