Ballito construction worker wins Hyundai Exter in SPAR competition

The win was made even more remarkable by the fact that Dube was working at the very store where he entered the competition.

A lunch-time purchase at the very supermarket he is helping to renovate has paid off in spectacular fashion for Tugela resident Nzuzo Dube, one of 50 winners of a brand-new Hyundai Exter in SPAR’s 2026 “Win a Car” competition.

The 28-year-old father of one was working on renovations at Lifestyle Centre SUPERSPAR in Ballito when he received the life-changing call.

Employed by Imvubu Steel, one of the contractors on site, Dube commutes to Ballito daily from Tugela.

“I immediately left everything and rushed to the shop. It is a very exciting moment for me. I am working on getting my driver’s licence, but in the meantime, the car will be registered in my brother’s name,” he said. Lifestyle Centre and Lifestyle SUPERSPAR co-owner Paul Rencken said the store was delighted to have produced one of the country’s 50 winners.

“Every year SPAR gives away 50 cars to customers across South Africa. This year there were 10 winners every week for five weeks, and we were lucky enough to have one of those winners at Lifestyle SUPERSPAR,” he said.

Rencken said the annual competition has been rewarding loyal customers for more than 20 years.

“It is really about giving back to our customers. Suppliers assist with sponsoring the vehicles, and customers qualify by using their SPAR Rewards cards and purchasing participating products.”

The win was made even more remarkable by the fact that Dube was working at the very store where he entered the competition.

“I only found out this morning that he was working on the renovations here. What a coincidence. If he hadn’t been working here, he might have bought his lunch somewhere else and perhaps not entered through our store,” said Rencken.

He added that many winners initially dismiss the notification calls as scams.

“Most customers don’t believe it at first. Some even put the phone down because they think it’s a scam. They only start believing it when they arrive at the store and receive the keys.”

Congratulating all 50 winners, Rencken said he hoped the competition would continue for many years to come.

“It is wonderful to see customers rewarded in this way. We thank all our customers for their support and congratulate Dube on his fantastic win.”
