Former East Coast Radio host Kevin Minter-Brown returns to radio with Radio PlayZN

Radio proved difficult to leave behind after five years away from the mic.

Veteran broadcaster Kevin Minter-Brown returns to radio this week as the new host of Radio PlayZN’s Afternoon Drive Show.

The former East Coast Radio Breakfast Show host and Umdloti resident announced his return to radio, sharing the news last Friday night with a packed pub quiz and comedy show at The Bush Tavern in Umdloti.

From Wednesday, July 1, Minter-Brown will bring his trademark wit, humour and candid style to the fairly new digital radio platform, broadcasting since November 2024.

The Bush Tavern buzzed with locals and a handful of new faces, evoking memories of Umdloti’s pre-development heyday as friends reunited over trivia, comedy and dancing well into the night.

Minter-Brown began his broadcasting career at Radio Port Natal – later rebranded as East Coast Radio – in 1994, where he spent nine years behind the microphone.

After eight years abroad, he returned to East Coast Radio for a further five years, establishing the station’s television department and becoming known to listeners as stuntman ‘Kevlar Kev’ on Darren Maul’s Breakfast Show.

He later revived Durban Youth Radio, relocating the station from the Bat Centre at Durban Harbour to Florida Road.

After five years at the helm, Minter-Brown changed direction, spending the next five years working remotely as a cyber investigator.

But radio proved difficult to leave behind.

Following a recent guest appearance on Keri Miller’s Radio PlayZN breakfast show, which attracted more than 57 000 listeners, Miller invited Minter-Brown to host the station’s Afternoon Drive Show.
