Umdloti author shares guide to raising lifelong readers

The book draws on decades of experience as a teacher, lecturer and English subject adviser, as well as research completed for his Master's degree.

Umdloti author and retired lecturer Raj Isaac wants to help parents convert their children into book lovers.

According to Isaac, creating a lifelong love of reading begins long before children step into their first classroom.

His latest self-published book Raising Avid Readers: How to Help your Preschool Child Enjoy Meaningful Reading offers practical advice for parents of preschoolers.

The book draws on decades of experience as a teacher, lecturer and English subject adviser, as well as research completed for his Master’s degree. It covers topics such as when to begin reading to children, choosing engaging books, motivating reluctant readers, traditional books versus e-books and techniques to improve comprehension.

“I have tried to make my book non-academic, practical, readable and short – ideal for busy parents, grandparents and others who read to children,” he said.

“Reading is more than just sounding out words on a page. Whether one reads silently or aloud, for study or enjoyment, meaning is crucial.”

The book features a foreword by writer and academic Dr Shamila Ramsookbhai, who describes it as “an excellent starting point for anyone hoping to build a strong literacy foundation in little children.”
