After 23 years of filling Ballito’s shopping baskets, the independently owned supermarket at Lifestyle Centre officially relaunched on November 3 following a 10-month redevelopment, the culmination of three years of planning and preparation.

The store’s layout, production facilities and fresh food departments have all been transformed.

Brothers and owners Paul and Bruce Rencken admit the ambitious project was daunting.

“The reinvention of Lifestyle SUPERSPAR was massive and scary. Paul and I were absolutely terrified,” Bruce told guests at the opening.

“It was only because of the incredible people around us that we were brave enough to embark on this project.”

Bruce acknowledged the challenges of operating an independent supermarket in an increasingly competitive retail market, but said the investment reflected their confidence in Ballito’s future. He paid tribute to the employees, contractors and suppliers who helped bring the transformation to life. The supermarket remained open throughout construction, with staff continuing to serve customers as departments were relocated and facilities rebuilt.

Lifestyle SUPERSPAR now features wider aisles, redesigned checkouts and expanded fresh food sections, including a bakery, butchery and deli offering sushi, curries, salads and ready-made meals.

For Paul, preserving the store’s personal connection with the community was just as important as its upgrade.
“Buildings can be transformed, but it’s people who give a place its heart,” he said.

“We have customers who have shopped with us for years, staff who have grown with the business and suppliers who have become part of the Lifestyle family. Those relationships mean an enormous amount to us.”
